Matt Hornback

Matt is a Lighting Artist at Blue Sky Studios, where he has worked since 2012. He took an active role in helping shape Blue Sky’s new lighting pipeline, based around USD and SideFX Houdini’s Solaris, and taught it to his department. His credits include Epic, Rio 2, The Peanuts Movie, Ice Age 5, Ferdinand, Spies in Disguise, and Nimona.

He enjoys the art of lighting, using color and value to enhance both the composition and emotional impact of shots. He also enjoys texturing and surfacing work, in addition to his technical side where he enjoys writing python scripts, and tinkering with effects.

At the University of Michigan, he earned his Bachelors of Arts in Film & Video Studies. Always interested in beautiful imagery, compelling storytelling, and the limits of technology, he took an interest in Visual Effects. After completing his degree at Michigan, he applied to the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he completed a Masters in Visual Effects, before starting work at Blue Sky Studios.

In his free time, Matt enjoys film, art, politics, video games, and a good beer, bourbon, or scotch to kick off the conversation. He also isn't fond of this whole third person thing, but it seems more professional.
